Topline:

If you're at least 21 years old and live in Santa Monica with two or more cars, you can make up to $599 to ditch one of them for five weeks.

Tell me more: The City of Santa Monica and LA Metro will pay the first 200 people who sign up for the "One Car Challenge" pilot program. Recipient will also get a Metro tap card loaded with $50 and up to 10 Metro Bike Share rides.

Why: The pilot is part of a larger Metro effort to promote alternatives to driving. Based on the results, they could expand the program to other parts of Los Angeles.

The program comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a proposal to offer $1,000 tax rebate to residents living car-free.

Details: Sign up before Oct. 6 here. The pilot program starts in November.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
