Topline:

Steve Hilton, the Republican candidate for California governor, will speak with a panel of Los Angeles journalists Tuesday afternoon, making his case for why a deeply Democratic electorate should trust him to tackle the state’s biggest challenges.

The details: The Los Angeles Times and LAist are co-hosting the candidate forum, which will be livestreamed at 4 p.m. and re-broadcast on LAist 89.3 FM at 7 p.m.

The issues: LAist housing correspondent David Wagner and L.A. Times journalists Mark Z. Barabak and Seema Mehta will moderate the approximately hour-long event. They will ask Hilton about his plans for addressing topics such as housing affordability, homelessness, climate change and the state’s relationship with the federal government (President Donald Trump has endorsed Hilton). The event will also include questions submitted by readers and listeners.

Where’s Becerra? Democratic front-runner Xavier Becerra was invited to participate in the forum, but his team has not responded. The invitation still stands.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.
