This summer, the Spanish government is sponsoring a contest to come up with lyrics for the country's wordless national anthem, La Marcha Real.

Spain's contest made us realize there's another song lacking lyrics: the All Things Considered theme.

Don Voegeli wrote our current theme in 1973. He says his approach to it was strictly as an instrumental.

"I would never use words in a situation like this with writing a theme," Voegeli says.

But other NPR theme songs do have lyrics, such as the theme song for Morning Edition.

We think it's about time we had words to sing every afternoon when our theme music plays, and in the spirit of the Spanish contest, we're leaving it up to you.

A couple of guidelines: original content, no profanity and make the lyrics appropriate for a news program.
