Musician Ralph Towner's career spans more than 30 years. In the early 1970s he played with the Paul Winter Consort and was a founding member of the group Oregon. Today he's a prolific solo artist on the acoustic guitar.

His new album, Time Line, was recorded at a monastery in the Austrian Alps. Towner was in NPR's Studio 4A recently to play some of his songs. He talks about Gershwin, living in Italy and his journey as a jazz pioneer on classical and 12-string guitars.
