The British army in Northern Ireland officially withdraws Tuesday, marking the end of an era and the final success of the peace process in the province.

As of Wednesday, there will be no regular military presence on the streets or in the countryside of Northern Ireland. Army checkpoints and watchtowers have been dismantled, and security is being provided by routine police activity.
