Worker critically injured at Vernon meat-packing plant

A worker at a meat packing plant in Vernon was critically injured Saturday after falling into a multi-blade meat grinder.

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. at Jobbers Meat Packing Co. Inc. at Fruitland Avenue and Downey Road, Vernon Fire Battalion Chief Dave Lazar said.

The worker's leg was amputated above the knee by the machine, but he was reportedly conscious when paramedics rushed him to a hospital, a Newsreel video crew said.

Rescuers retrieved the man's leg, placed it on ice, and transported it to a hospital in a separate ambulance, Newsreel reported.

Lazar said the man was injured by "some sort of meat grinding machine.'"

The unidentified victim was reportedly in critical condition.

No one at Jobbers Meat Packing was available on Saturday for comment.
