UC Berkeley law professor judicial nomination: Senate to vote on Goodwin Liu
Democratic leaders in the Senate have scheduled a vote tomorrow on the nomination of UC Berkeley professor Goodwin Liu for a federal appeals court, which has been been stalled for more than a year.
President Barack Obama nominated the law professor for a seat on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. But Republicans questioned his lack of experience on the bench and his judicial temperament.
On the Senate floor, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) challenged Republicans to heed the words of the top judge in the country. "Chief Justice Roberts called on senators not to play politics with our nominees. He warned that delays in filling vacancies has created acute difficulties in some judicial districts. That’s a quote."
Boxer said the Ninth Circuit is the busiest appellate court in the country; it hears one in five federal appeals cases. Liu needs the votes of 60 senators to approve his nomination.
