UC President orders review of 'use of force' policy on all 10 campuses after recent incidents
UC President Mark G. Yudof spoke with all 10 campus chancellors Monday and said staff will be examining recent use of force on campuses, police protocol and training, and overall policy on peaceful protests, according to a release from his office.
Yudof spoke via teleconference and told the chancellors he was "appalled" by the images of students being pepper sprayed at UC Davis and jabbed with batons at UC Berkeley.
“We cannot let this happen again,” he said, according to the release. Yudof said everything must be done to protect the rights of students, faculty and staff to peacefully protest.
Senior staff will work with campus police chiefs to bring together policies on use of force at each university and look at requirements for the presence of senior administrators and observers in certain situations.
