Two legislative seats up for special elections in SoCal
The Southland will hold two special elections Tuesday to fill vacancies left by state lawmakers who were elected to the Los Angeles City Council.
Eleven candidates in the western part of the Valley are hoping to win enough votes to make it to a November runoff for the 45th District. The crowded field includes aides to Congressman Brad Sherman and L.A. City Councilmen Paul Krekorian and Paul Koretz.
Bob Blumenfield held the seat until earlier this summer when he was sworn into the Los Angeles City Council. He’s endorsed Andra Hoffman, a government affairs official at Glendale College, in the race.
There are seven Democrats, three Republicans and one independent running for the office. That’s important because Democrats in the Assembly are hoping to regain their super-majority status. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top-two finishers will face off again on Nov. 19th.
A special election will also be held to fill the state Senate seat previously held by Curren Price. Assemblywoman Holly Mitchell is expected to win outright on Tuesday. A victory there would trigger another special election to fill Mitchell's seat.
