Trio of construction projects to close down roads near LAX

The summer traveling season is upon us, and it's about to get even more congested around L.A.'s busiest airport.

Three separate infrastructure projects will temporarily close down portions of Century Boulevard, along with 405 Freeway on- and off-ramps, impacting LAX-bound travelers through most of August.

The first construction project has already started. Single-lane periodic closures on Century Boulevard between Aviation Boulevard and Concourse Way, and on northbound Aviation Boulevard between 104th Street and Century, will allow Metro to conduct pothole and water-line maintenance on those streets. The work is part of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project and will continue through August 6 every weekday from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

This work is expected to have the least impact of the three projects, Los Angeles World Airports spokeswoman Mary Grady told KPCC.

Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, the second project will begin. The California Department of Transportation will close and repave the 405 on- and off-ramps on westbound Century Boulevard near La Cienega for 55 hours. The ramps will reopen on August 1 at 5 a.m.

Grady said it was important for anyone taking a flight or coming to pick someone up at the airport to know those ramps will not be available.

The last project gets underway at 11 p.m. on August 1 and will last about a month. Century Boulevard between Aviation Boulevard and Bellanca Avenue will have alternating closures in one direction, with westbound lanes closed one week and eastbound lanes the next.

The first week will affect westbound traffic. Lanes will be closed Monday through Friday from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. The project is expected to be completed by August 27, Grady said.

“Here’s the bottom line for passengers: If they’re coming to LAX, whether to fly out or  to pick somebody up, between 11 at night and six in the morning, Century Boulevard is probably not the best way to go,” she said.

However, she added that there are many other ways to get in and out of the airport that can alleviate the impact on commuters.

Drivers can exit on Sepulveda Boulevard if they're traveling on the 105. Grady also recommends exiting on Howard Hughes Parkway or La Tierra Boulevard from the 405 as an alternative.
