California's state parks: the stars of Hollywood

For eleven years, the TV show "M*A*S*H" surveyed the lives of U.S. Army doctors during the Korean War. In reality, most of the “location” filming took place right here in Southern California. This weekend, you can see firsthand where many of those scenes unfolded during a hike at Malibu Creek State Park.

Manny Grace of the California State Parks Foundation told KPCC's Alex Cohen that this event is one of several fundraisers for the California State Parks Foundation.

First on Saturday, October 30, there will be two hikes led by Ranger Mike Malone of the National Park Service, and Brian Rooney, volunteer and docent at Malibu Creek State Park. Scheduled hikes at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. last between one and half to two hours, and feature sites in the park where "M*A*S*H" was filmed.

"M*A*S*H" the movie (1970) will be shown on Saturday, November 6 and introduced by Elliott Gould who will also do a Q&A following the screening. Since so many state parks have been used as television series locations, they will also screen two episodes of "M*A*S*H" the television series.

William Christopher, director Charles Dubin, and other cast and crew will be present for a Q&A following the television screenings. Both the movie and the television series were filmed in Malibu Creek State Park.

They'll also screen "Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi," shown in all its full screen glory, which used Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park and Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park for locations.
