Riverside sheriff's deputy shoots, kills man in Cabazon
A Riverside County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who fled deputies in Cabazon on Saturday.
At about 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person near the parking lot of outlet stores in Cabazon, according to a press release.
Deputies responding to the scene located the suspect and attempted to contact him. At that time the suspect fled, running across the I-10 freeway, the statement issued Sunday said.
The statement continued: “A perimeter was established in the area, and with assistance from the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s helicopter, the suspect was located near Johnson Lane. The suspect continued to evade deputies and failed to obey deputies’ commands. Officers attempted to take him into custody and an officer involved shooting occurred.”
Later, authorities said the shooting occurred when the suspect "pointed a metal object simulating a weapon at the deputy." They were in a dark field and the deputy believed it was a firearm, according to a statement. Authorities say the suspect was ordered to drop the object but refused. That's when the deputy shot the suspect, fatally wounding him.
Deputies provided medical aid and called for medical services to assist. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Riverside Sheriffs would not release the suspects name before notifying his family.
The deputy who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave, following the department’s policy.
Sheriff’s Department did not return KPCC’s calls for comment or further information.
No one else was hurt, according to the statement.
