California politicians are discovering that there’s nothing like face time when it comes to securing federal money for local needs.
Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin came to Washington for a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting. He also used the trip to meet with members of the California congressional delegation about funding for transportation and jobs.
Gin says the city’s had a D.C. lobbying firm on the city payroll for about three years, but he discovered that wasn’t enough. "There really isn’t any substitute for personal contact and personal relationships when you bring it back down to the base level of things."
Mayor Gin says his in-person lobbying helped the South Bay secure millions of federal dollars to pay for methods to prevent debris from washing into Santa Monica Bay.
