Plea hearing delayed for Riverside boy accused of killing neo-Nazi dad

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

A Riverside judge has postponed a plea hearing for a 10-year-old boy accused of killing his father two weeks ago. The victim was a rising figure in the white supremacist movement. The defense wants a psychiatric evaluation of the boy.

Authorities say the boy intentionally shot and killed his father, 32-year-old National Socialist Movement leader Jeff Hall, as he sat on a couch in the family’s Riverside home.

The boy appeared in Juvenile Court shackled and wearing a baggy orange juvenile detention shirt. He was calm and attentive. The boy has a history of violent outbursts and was being home-schooled at the time of the murder.

Prosecutor Ambrosio Rodriguez didn’t suggest a motive – but did say Jeff Hall’s neo-Nazi lifestyle is a factor in the case. “I do expect that the NSM issue will become part of the case, I mean it already is. It’s hateful vitriol and raising five children with such unmitigated hate, I don’t see how that doesn’t become an issue when we’re talking about a 10-year-old boy.”

The boy was apparently trained to use a firearm, and sometimes joined his father on armed, neo-Nazi border patrol-style trips to the California and Arizona deserts. His attorney is expected to enter a plea in July.

The boy’s stepmother faces multiple counts of child endangerment and criminal storage of a firearm, for keeping a loaded handgun where children had easy access.
