Newport Beach cops want fine levied against those involved in rowdy parties
Police in Newport Beach are trying to get its City Council to support a crackdown on rowdy partying. The Council considered the matter at its meeting last night.
Newport Beach police could fine disruptive revelers up to $8,000 for each infraction. Police propose that they place red tags on houses they’ve designated as problem spots, where eight or more people routinely attend loud social gatherings.
The city could fine all partygoers at those red-tagged houses from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the number of violations. Owners of weekly rentals could face even higher fines.
The issue arose from the enormous block parties that break out every Fourth of July in the Orange County beach town.
It’s illegal in most cities to set fines over a thousand dollars for municipal code violations. But because Newport Beach is a charter city, that restriction doesn’t apply.
