Montebello cop who slammed suspect's head into ground charged with assault

A Montebello police officer faces criminal charges after reportedly slamming a suspect's head into the pavement during an arrest, according to prosecutors.

Cpl. Mark Ryan, 37, was charged with one felony count of assault under color of authority, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday.

Ryan surrendered to authorities Wednesday and was released after posting bail of $35,000, prosecutors said in a statement.

Officers had been responding to a call of two men tagging on Halloween in 2014. Ryan reportedly assaulted one of the suspects during the arrest.

The incident was captured in security camera footage from a restaurant, according to the L.A. Times.

The Sheriff's Department was called in to investigate and after reviewing the video concluded that Ryan's actions warranted criminal charges, the Times reports.

According to the Times, Ryan is a former president of Montebello's police union. If convicted, he faces three years in state prison.
