Nixon rival McGovern speaks at Nixon Library
A little political history is unfolding in the Southland this week. The Nixon Library is hosting former Nixon rival George McGovern.
KPCC’s Shirley Jahad tells us more.
Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern is appearing Wednesday at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda. The anti-Vietnam War senator from South Dakota was the victim of the Nixon dirty tricks campaign. The Nixon camp break into the Watergate hotel Democratic Party campaign offices sparked the investigation leading to the president's resignation two years later.
This week McGovern is talking about his new book on Abraham Lincoln. He says as a Democrat and historian, it’s a unique pleasure for him to be the guest of the Nixon Library where he’ll be talking about Lincoln, the founder of the Republican Party.
Officials with the Nixon Library say McGovern’s visit is an exciting opportunity for people to learn about the history McGovern lived through and has written about.
The Nixon Library was for decades run by political supporters who opposed anything that might tarnish Nixon’s legacy. The National Archives has taken over the library and adopted a more scholarly approach.
