LAPD officer shoots, critically wounds man in Venice
A man wielding a knife was shot and critically wounded by an LAPD officer in Venice Monday around 2 p.m., according to a department spokesperson. The incident occurred in the 600 block of Rose Avenue.
Two Pacific Division officers were responding to a radio call of a man with a knife, said Officer Rosario Herrera.
“The officers ordered the suspect to drop the knife, and the suspect did not comply,” Herrera said. “That’s when an officer involved shooting occurred.”
The department offered no other details. Video of the incident has appeared on social media.
The shooting occurred about a mile from where an LAPD officer shot and killed an unarmed homeless man two months ago.
Chief Charlie Beck called the shooting of 25-year-old Brendon Glenn in that incident “troubling.”
“Anytime an unarmed person is shot by a Los Angeles police officer, it takes extraordinary circumstances to justify that, and I have not seen those extraordinary circumstances,” Beck said at the time.
The shooting of Glenn prompted angry protests in Venice, where residents said LAPD officers often mistreat the growing homeless population in the area.
