La Habra teachers walk off the job
The strike by La Habra City School District teachers to undo a 2 percent pay reduction and cuts to health care benefits will continue for a second day today. Teachers plan to show up in force at this afternoon’s school board meeting as well. About 90 percent of the district's 225 teachers walked picket lines yesterday.
They’re the second group of Southland teachers to walk out this year over salary cuts.
Dozens of teachers at Imperial Middle School and Las Positas Elementary School next door finished the first day of a strike that's been a year in the making.
The teachers union has been negotiating for more than a year with the school district over a teachers contract, and they haven't been able to come to an agreement. The school district imposed salary cuts – permanent salary cuts – and the union membership voted to go on strike.
The superintendent of the school district has said the funding cuts from Sacramento are so dire that that's forced the school district to take this step.
