On Tuesday, Inglewood’s City Council unanimously passed a 45-day moratorium on rent hikes exceeding 5 percent per year. They also voted to halt evictions during that time period.

Mayor James Butts proposed the moratorium. During the meeting, Inglewood residents lined the council chambers to share their own stories of rising rent and displacement. They said they’re suffering as wealthier newcomers are attracted to the neighborhood by developments like the Crenshaw rail line and and the new NFL stadium.

Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.
