Hemet police shoot and kill man with gun in strip mall parking lot

Hemet police officers were patrolling a strip mall in the 200 block of East Stetson Avenue in Hemet when they contacted a suspect and shot and killed him after he pulled out a handgun and didn't comply with orders to drop the weapon, according to police.

Hemet police officers shot and killed a man in a strip mall parking lot after he pulled out a handgun on Thursday morning, Hemet Police Lieutenant Dean Evans told KPCC.
Two officers were patrolling strip malls in the southern part of Hemet, Evans said. They saw a vehicle in a strip mall parking lot with a man in it who "looked a little strange," Evans said, acting "suspicious and agitated," according to a release from the department. The officers contacted the man, according to Evans.
"Initially he was cooperative, but he grew more and more agitated as the contact [with police] went on," Evans said.
A third officer arrived on the scene after police called for backup, Evans said. The man in the car pulled out a handgun and officers gave him several commands to drop the weapon, Evans said, but after he didn't comply, he was shot and killed.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. He was on parole and had an active felony warrant out for his arrest, Evans said.
The man's gun was recovered at the scene, according to the release. His name wasn't being released, pending the notification of his next of kin. No officers were injured.
