Fire collapses roof at Animo Charter High School; students out for summer
A two-alarm fire at Animo Charter High School in South Los Angeles caused the roof to collapse, L.A. County Fire Inspector Rick Flores tells KPCC. The school was already out for summer according to authorities.
"No students or staff" were at the school, Green Dot schools director of communications Gabriel Sanchez told the media, according to a school police tweet. However, two firefighters were injured fighting the blaze, NBC L.A. reports.
Flores said firefighters went in to see if there was anybody inside and found the building empty.
"We proceeded to do a coordinated attack from below and above," Flores said.
"It looks like building is probably going to be a total building loss," Flores said, but he added that they were keeping it from spreading to surrounding buildings.
"School begins on August 12 and we will have a plan in place to serve all of our students," Green Dot CEO Cristina de Jesus said in a statement. "At this time, we do not know the cause of the fire nor the extent of the damage."
There were approximately 34 firefighters at the scene, Flores said.
"Crews are fighting this fire aggressively," L.A. County Fire staff tweeted.
Numerous Fire Department vehicles could be seen in images from the scene.
The school was founded in 2004 and has over 600 students.
