Federal regulators ding Chinese companies and their middleman for faked ATV records

Federal regulators are cracking down on Chinese companies that have brought off-road vehicles to California with falsified emissions reports.
Four manufacturers and their U.S. agent are in trouble with the Environmental Protection Agency. The companies based in China sold more than 200,000 all terrain vehicles during model years three and four years ago.
Those vehicles bore certificates that guaranteed their conformity to U.S. emissions standards. The EPA is revoking those certificates.
Federal officials believe a consultant for the four companies, MotorScience Enterprise, compiled and faked data, and lied to the government about how well the emissions systems control pollution from the vehicles’ tailpipes. A spokeswoman for the EPA says the agency is considering sanctions against the companies for violating the Clean Air Act.
