Final Brown-Whitman debate takes place tonight
The final debate between the two major party candidates for governor is tonight. You can hear that debate this evening at 6:30 on 89.3 KPCC and at KPCC.org.
Republican Meg Whitman and Democrat Jerry Brown face off at Dominican University in San Rafael just north of San Francisco. Former NBC News Anchor Tom Brokaw will moderate the one-hour affair. The two are vying to succeed Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
Each will try to win over voters who may just now be tuning into the race and the many who’ve been following it but remain undecided. Polls show as many as one-fifth of likely voters fit that category. Stories of whether Whitman knowingly employed an undocumented immigrant and of a Brown aide calling Whitman a whore have dominated the news.
But polls show creating jobs and turning around the economy top California voters' list of concerns. Official unemployment has been stuck above 12 percent for more than a year, but the unofficial rate is much higher because many have given up looking for work.
