Curriculum Change Allows Cal State Students Who Failed Math To Stay Enrolled In Classes
First-year students in the California State University system used to be dropped from the rolls for failing remedial math, but under a revised program remedial math has been dropped and students who don't pass a revised first-year math curriculum are allowed to try again in their second year.
Under the revised curriculum, remedial math was replaced by classes that focus less on calculations and more on ideas. At Cal State Los Angeles, 70% of students have passed the new classes.
Cal State says it wants to focus on what students can do, instead of what they can't.
