Cal State San Bernardino takes first of many furlough days

Cal State San Bernardino will be closed tomorrow. It's the first of many "furlough Fridays" to hit the campus. KPCC's Steven Cuevas has the story.

It's called a State Budget Campus Closure Day. It's part of the fiscal hangover brought on by cuts imposed on the Cal State system. The state budget shaved about $560 million from the California State University's 23 campuses.

That means Cal State San Bernardino has to hang that "Sorry, We're Closed" sign in the window 16 times in the coming school year. Many of the closures will be on Fridays. If you have business on campus, you'll want to check the university's revised schedule online to see when classrooms go dark. Campus security and a handful of maintenance workers will stick around on the closure days.

All university employees have to take additional furlough days at other times of the year, too. The cuts could save Cal State San Bernardino around $10 million. Fall classes begin September 24th.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
