City Council approves $100 million dollar tax break for LA Convention Center expansion

You may have heard about the plan to expand the aging LA convention center. The LA City Council voted Wednesday to give the developers a massive $100 million dollar tax break.

The proposed $1.2 billion dollar development includes not only the updated convention center, but a park and a 38-story hotel. But the developer say they need a tax break to fully fund the project. That’ll happen mostly through keeping some of the occupancy tax paid by hotel guests.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
