Cesar Chavez Day: 3 local events to celebrate the holiday
In observance of Cesar Chavez Day, most California public schools and state government offices will be closed Monday. Federal agencies like banks and the U.S. Postal Office will remain open, though President Barack Obama issued a proclamation Friday honoring the holiday.
Cesar Chavez Day is an official holiday in just three states (here in California, and observed optionally in Colorado and Texas). The civil rights activist and farm worker, best known for his leading role in the American labor movement, will be remembered through celebrations around the country.
Below are three ways to honor Chavez in SoCal:
- Get a glimpse into Chavez's work in the film "Cesar Chavez" released Friday. Listen to a review on AirTalk's Filmweek or read about the White House premiere. The movie is playing in a number of theaters, possibly one near you.

- If movies aren't your thing, then you can make your voice heard in the 21st Annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice. The free event is scheduled to take place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The march begins at Brand Park in Mission Hills, located at 15174 San Fernando Mission Road.
- This one's for the kids: Celebrate Chavez's birthday at the El Monte Library with stories and art activities. The event is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. El Monte Library is located at 3224 Tyler Ave.
