Update: Mills Fire burns 534 acres, 20 percent containment

UPDATE 6/29 2:00 p.m.: 

Evacuation orders for residents in the areas affected by the Mills Fire were lifted at 7:30 p.m. last night, as firefighters gained control of the blaze despite triple-digit temperatures. So far, 534 acres have been burned and the fire is 20 percent contained. 

No injuries have been reported and one residence has been damaged. 

Highway 38 is expected to open Saturday morning and firefighters continue to build containment lines and tackle hot spots. Neighborhoods north of Carter Street and west of Bryant Street were open to residents only, according to Cal Fire.

Firefighters expect to reach 100 percent containment by Sunday evening.

Residents are being evacuated Friday afternoon in Yucaipa as a brush fire burns near homes in the San Bernardino County community, where temperatures hover around 100 degrees, NBC LA reported.

Dubbed the Mills Fire, the blaze appears to have erupted on a small mountain range bordered on three sides by Redlands, Mentone and Yucaipa.

Evacuations are in effect for the are of Olive Tree Lane and Cabrini Place, according to a spokeserson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

It was not immediately known how many people have been ordered to leave the area, the spokesperson said. No injuries have been reported.

The fire appears to have erupted on a small mountain range that runs between Redlands and Mentone.

It was reported as having started about 2:30 p.m. near Mill Creek Road (Highway 38) and Bryant Street in Mentone, west of Yucaipa. The blaze burned at least 200 acres within 90 minutes, according to Cal Fire's online incident report.

Evacuations are "imminent," according to Bill Peters, spokesman for Cal Fire San Bernardino. Aerial footage showed flames breeching hillsides and coming within yards of homes.

Excessive heat warnings went into effect Friday for San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura counties as the region's first heat wave of the summer pushed the mercury into dangerous territory.

It was 100 degrees in Mentone as the fire burned, according to the National Weather Service. Winds in the area are calm.
