Broadcasters honored at 63rd Mark Twain Awards

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

ANAHEIM (AP) - The Associated Press Television-Radio Association honored broadcasters in 12 Western states during Saturday night's 63rd annual Mark Twain Awards gala in Anaheim.

Hall of Fame inductees and APTRA scholarship winners were also celebrated during the black-tie optional banquet at Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel.

APTRA's Station of the Year is Aberdeen, Wash., radio station KXRO, led by news director Ian Cope.

The prestigious Stan Chambers Extraordinary Achievement Award went to Jean Enerson of Seattle's KING-TV. Enerson has been reporting and anchoring the news in the Seattle area for more than 42 years.

Hall of Fame inductees:

Mark Howell: Mark Howell retired last year, after some two decades as news director at Bakersfield's KUZZ AM/FM, where he was the "Radio News Voice of Kern County." He's a former APTRA board member, and perhaps the most honored APTRA winner in the organization's history.

Gary Daigneault: Gary Daigneault has been news director, as well as co-owner of KCDZ-FM Twentynine Palms for two decades. He's been honored by APTRA and other organizations numerous times for his reporting. He's a two-time APTRA president, as well as a long time board member.

George Knapp: George Knapp is a Las Vegas institution, reporting and anchoring at KLAS-TV for nearly two decades. Knapp has won a Peabody Award, 14 Emmys and numerous other awards for his work. He's done multiple reports on Nevada's mysterious Area 51.

Rush Limbaugh III: Rush Limbaugh started his radio career at KFBK radio in Sacramento and the rest, as they say, is history. Since 1988, he's hosted "The Rush Limbaugh Show" syndicated nationwide by Premiere Radio Networks. It is the highest-rated talk-radio program in the United States. Limbaugh has repeatedly won the National Association of Broadcasters' Marconi Radio Award and he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame.

Paul Mo yer: A Southern California broadcast legend, Paul Moyer anchored at KABC, and KNBC for four decades. A multiple Emmy and Golden Mike award winner for his investigative reporting and anchoring breaking news, Moyer retired last year.

Tad Dunbar: The most recognizable face in the Reno television market, Tad Dunbar spent an incredible 38 years anchoring at KOLO television before retiring. He then went to cross-town KRNV, where he continues to this day.

John Coleman: John Coleman has been doing weather for more than 50 years (since he was in college!) and, for seven years, was a weather reporter for "Good Morning America." He also was one of the original developers of "The Weather Channel," and he's still at it at San Diego's KUSI-TV.

Dave Niehaus: Dave Niehaus has been the voice of the Seattle Mariners since creation of the team in 1977, calling more than 5,000 games. Previously, he spent seven years as the voice of the then California Angels, teamed with Dick E nberg. He also served as one of the voices of the UCLA Bruins.

Dave Walker and Lois Hart: Sacramento's best known anchor team, Dave and Lois Hart began working as anchors in the early 1970's, and got married in 1979. They made television history as the first anchor team when CNN signed on in 1980. They made more television history in 1989, when they were the first anchor team on CNBC. Dave and Lois returned to Sacramento, where they started anchoring together in 1990, and remained a team at KCRA until their retirement in 2008.

Kent Dana: Kent Dana stepped down as anchor at KPHO in Phoenix last year after nearly 40 years in the business. He was at the anchor desk for some of the biggest state, and national stories since the 1970s and continued through last year. One of the most recognizable anchors in Phoenix, his legacy continues with his son, Joe, who is also a Phoenix anchor. He's a member of the Arizona Broadcasters Hall Of Fame.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
