Labor rally planned for downtown Los Angeles
Organizers say they expect several thousand people at a labor union rally in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday. It coincides with similar demonstrations in several cities.
Union leaders say they want to show their strength as the union movement comes under fire in Wisconsin and elsewhere, and faces declining membership.
Organizers say union workers from Southern California and the Central Valley will march to demand good jobs and to demonstrate solidarity with Wisconsin public sector employees. The president of the Wisconsin Professional Firefighters Association is scheduled to speak.
Six international union presidents are also on the agenda, including Teamsters chief James Hoffa Jr. and United Farm Workers leader Arturo Rodriquez. The Grammy-winning labor-friendly band Ozomotli will perform.
The march begins at the LA Convention Center at 10 a.m., stops at three companies that labor union leaders say are trying to cut wages, and culminates with a rally in Pershing Square scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
Police say the march will delay traffic on downtown streets including Figueroa, Ninth and Olive through early afternoon.
