LA County leaders set to vote on post-fire eviction protections and vacation rental rules

Topline:

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to vote Tuesday on new eviction protections and vacation rental rules in the wake of the fires.

The eviction protections: Tenants in unincorporated L.A. County who open their doors to people displaced by the fires would be protected from eviction if the plan is approved, even if their leases do not allow for those additional occupants. Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a similar executive order on Friday, but the County’s proposed rules would also cover pets. The L.A. City Council is weighing similar protections, but that proposal still needs a second vote.

The vacation rental rules: The county proposal would also temporarily relax local vacation rental rules in order to create more short-term housing options for families scrambling to find a place to live. Hosts on platforms like Airbnb would be temporarily allowed to list multiple properties, including ADUs.

What’s behind the changes: The destruction of thousands of homes in the L.A. fires has thrown the region’s already strained rental housing market into overdrive, causing displaced families to compete over a shortage of affordable options. The sudden rise in demand has also raised concern that existing tenants could be evicted to make way for higher-paying renters.

When and how to watch the vote: The L.A. County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025 at 1 p.m. You can watch the meeting here, or participate in person at 500 West Temple Street, Room 381B in the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration.
