More LA spots to try
  • In-N-Out loyalists, your chance to defect to the dark side of East Coast import Five Guys is getting upped, with rumors that they are "coming soon" to a Miracle Mile address.
  • To help guide you through the abyss of "artisanal" coffee options in Los Angeles all you need is your phone or iPad, and the L.A.'s Best Coffee app, which we heard about this morning via Eater LA. We know what you're thinking: THANK GOD, IT'S ABOUT TIME.
  • It seems like every sweet treat gets its own holiday. Whether it's donuts, coffee cake, pie, waffles, or even taffy, we'll take any excuse no matter how flimsy to indulge in something delicious. Today is national pots de crème day, and to help you celebrate the dessert custard, we've compiled a list of popular pots de crème around town.
  • A cocktail is four things: a spirit, a sugar, a bitter and water. Sounds easy, right? So why are $15 cocktails suddenly the norm? Because a great drink is about more than putting some crappy flavored vodka in a shaker, pouring it in a glass and adding Sprite. A great cocktail is a work of art, a tip of the hat to another age, and the science of hand-crafting a drink is largely about taking those original four components and adding a personal spin to the mix.
  • Aberdeen, Maryland's Grab-N-Go burger has gone all "how dare you?!" after SoCal burger chain In-N-Out Burger slapped them with a lawsuit alleging trademark infringement. An exec for the burger joint, Gus Siperko, says the folks at Grab-N-Go "are really rather livid over this."
  • What did you have for breakfast? Your usual Activia yogurt cup and some coffee? A power bar? Nothing? (Tsk tsk.) That's okay, you can make up for it later today by "celebrating" National Waffle Day! "The 'holiday' marks the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron, which Cornelius Swarthout received on August 24, 1869," offers Serious Eats as explanation.
