More LA spots to try
  • What's going on in the local food scene? Chew on this: New cocktails are ready for imbibing, an upcoming class will help train you to be an official "beer server," and March 27 is National Paella Day, plus a few more food news bites.
  • Coming soon to a Starbucks near you: beer, wine and small plates. A Starbucks in Calabasas applied for a permit to sell beer and wine last week.
  • Today was the big announcement about the forthcoming food options at FIGAT7TH, the shopping area in Downtown L.A. that's in the midst of a $40-million renovation. Called TASTE FIGAT7TH, the quick-service café-style dining area will have eclectic international fare available for hungry shoppers.
  • Los Angeles is a donut city, from those ubiquitous stands selling cheery pink boxes lined with sprinkle-topped glistening rounds to the daring pastries plumped with rich foie gras at innovative eateries. In L.A. make our donuts topped with bacon, or vegan versions for animal-free enjoyment, and we'll even take the gluten out. But the worlds of donuts and art are about to collide in a delicious way.
  • Get ready to get cheesy: The 10th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational, the hottest thing to ooze between two pieces of bread, is taking place April 28th. Tickets are on sale for those who wish to put their tastebuds to the task, and registration is open for those who are looking to have a shot of ooey, gooey, melty glory and take part in the competition.
  • The brunch community was up in arms this weekend when it realized that 20,000 long-distance runners would be making their "Stadium to Sea" trek through prime brunch territory. (Perhaps folks were particularly cranky this year because they had downed a few too many shots of Jameson for St. Patrick's Day.)
