More LA spots to try
  • In California, many chefs feel that right now they have to fight for their right to foie gras. Serving the fattened duck liver, a delicacy, is going to be illegal come July 1, when a 2004 ban finally goes into law. The foie fight was in full force last night on menus, sidewalks, and...teh internets.
  • A lobster poacher -- or, as they say in my hometown of Boston, a lobstah poachah -- in Orange County who was caught in January with more than three times the legal limit of lobsters was fined $20,000 and had to spend seven days in jail. City News Service reports that 30-year-old Marbel Para of Romoland was picking the little red fellows up on Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve on January 15. It's perfectly legal to catch them by hand for your own devices, but you can only take seven a day.
  • As we learned a couple of months ago, the first California Dunkin' Donuts (in a long, long time, let's not start that convo again, there are NONE in Los Angeles, got it?) is on the base at Camp Pendleton, and it opened May 3. But if you're a civilian, does that mean you can't go?
  • Lactivists are loving Time magazine's cover, showing L.A. mommy blogger Jamie Lynne Grumet nursing her nearly-four-year-old son. And they have some interesting thoughts about everyone being comfortable with older children suckling from their moms.
  • When you make a movie about a massive battleship, it's only fitting that you celebrate the premiere with a massive cake, right?
  • It's official: the Country Boy at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles is no longer a menu item. From now on the dish that comes with 3 wings will be known as Obama's Special.
