Chez Jay, a dive-y dining institution in Santa Monica, has been granted landmark status, and will remain standing. Considered the inspiration for the fictional Regal Beagle from TV's "Three's Company" (set in Santa Monica), Chez Jay has looked pretty much exactly the same since it was built in 1959.

What really wowed us on a recent visit is the restaurant's revamped sake menu. In addition to being incredibly varied in its selections, the menu actually decodes flavor profiles and styles, just like a education-focused wine bar would do.

Here we are in late 2012, and not only are contemporary food trucks still a popular trend, but cities are still trying to kick them to the curb. One of the municipalities to voice a wish to put the brakes on the biz is South Pasadena, where business owners say they're a threat to brick-and-mortar restaurants.
