Grand Performances presents the performance series, conceived and curated by Rubén Martínez, that explores L.A.'s history through under-told stories. This edition focuses on the arrival of refugees from war-torn countries to L.A. in 1984. That migration transformed the Pico-Union neighborhood, turning it into "Little Central America." Sanctuaries were established to protect people from zealous immigration policies, one of which was at the Echo Park United Methodist Church. The production uses poetry, music, dance and imagery to represent that period.
