Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Get used to gloomy skies in the morning followed by afternoon clearing — we are knee deep in May Gray this week.

Quick Facts
    • Today’s weather: Cloudy morning, partly cloudy afternoon
    • Beaches: 66 to 70
    • Mountains: mid 60s to low 70s
    • Inland: 77 to 83
    • Warnings and advisories: None

Grab a sweater for the morning as cloudy and patchy fog conditions will continue through 11 a.m. Come this afternoon, expect partly cloudy skies.

For the coasts, however, it'll be a mostly cloudy day for the beaches and inland coast cities like Norwalk, Costa Mesa and downtown Los Angeles. Daytime highs for the beaches and inland coast will stay in the mid 60s, up to 70 degrees.

Expect warmer temperatures with highs in the upper 70s, low 80s for western San Fernando Valley and the Inland Empire.

The high desert temps will be warmer — up to 86 degrees in Victorville, and a scorching 100 in the Coachella Valley.

Tonight's lows will be in the low 60s, mid 50s.

This day in history

On this day in 2014, strong Santa Ana winds and record highs of 100 degrees in San Diego County led to the Poinsettia Fire in Carlsbad.

Things to do

  • Belle and Sebastian: Scottish indie pop band Belle and Sebastian have been throwing down upbeat, charming tunes since their very first album Tigermilk in 1996. Their latest (and 12th!) studio album, Late Developers came out last year. They also collaborated with Suki Waterhouse on her 2023 summer b-side, "Every Day’s a Lesson in Humility." Frontman Stuart Murdoch and the band are playing two equally intimate venues downtown across three nights. We love the United Theatre at the Ace for the acoustics and art deco vibe; the Bellwether is one of L.A.’s newer spots to catch live music and is mostly standing room.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
