  • It shouldn't be a surprise that a new show by Evidence Room is excellent, considering the group's history. For more than a decade the troupe has been one of the most well-respected companies in Los Angeles, winning awards and garnering nominations by the score. Regardless of all this, I was surprised and delighted at how fantastic their new show, the West Coast premiere of Margo Veil, is.
  • After die-hard fans in Southern California camped out for days, the final "Harry Potter" movie did not disappoint studio executives, reports Forbes. Grossing $43.5 million, the film became the highest-earning midnight debut ever. Wizards beat vampires in the epic showdown, with "Harry Potter" out-grossing "Twilight"'s midnight debut by over $13 million.
  • Beginning at 7:00 p.m. tonight, ramps on the 405 freeway will be shut down in preparation for the weekend's full closure of the interstate, to allow the Mulholland Drive Bridge to be demolished. Known as Carmageddon, the closure promises to turn the westside and surrounding areas into a clusterfuck for any cars that choose to drive during that time.
  • With a few (very few) notable exceptions, we're looking at a very pedestrian and predictable Emmys this year. The only thing shocking about the Emmys is how the Television Academy can ignore some of the best programs on TV. --- "The Green Room" and "Louie" are part of the TV Junkie Must-Watch Plan for tonight - check it out.
  • A trio of Santa Barbara organizations has teamed up to launch a balloon into near space this weekend, just for kicks. Santa Barbara's Natural History Museum, Amateur Radio Club and Hackerspace have partnered to launch a high-altitude weather balloon to 100,000 feet on Saturday.
  • We found a number of events happening on the Westside tonight, squeezing in the fun before the 405 shuts down. Our favorite is a dinner and lecture on ancient Roman dining at the Getty Villa. But there's also free music concerts at the Hammer Museum and on the Santa Monica Pier with the Bangles. Read on for all the details.
  • Familiar faces will return to HBO's "Eastbound & Down," find out who. --- Ted Danson will be starring in the upcoming season of CBS' "CSI" which we think is a waste of his talents. --- We found a recent interview with Sherwood Schwartz, the recently deceased creator of "Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch." --- All this and the TV Junkie Must-Watch Plan.
  • Good luck sleeping tonight. Because tomorrow morning you'll wake up with a brand new set of ears. Spotify, the online music service that has taken Europe by storm and is set on turning iTunes into merely the bloatware you sync your iPhone with is finally cleared for landing in the U.S.
  • On July 13, 1923, Harry Chandler, owner of the Los Angeles Times, "officially unveils a sign on Mount Lee in the Hollywood area of L.A. to advertise his new housing development nearby." It reads: HOLLYWOODLAND. The rest, as they say, is history.
  • Brooklyn-based solo dance artist and Powerful People company director Miguel Gutierrez is coming to LA this weekend for two shows in the historic Palm Court ballroom of the Alexandria Hotel (downtown). Brought into our midst by Meg Wolfe's Show Box LA, the highly acclaimed and extensively awarded performer/creator will present the LA premiere of his solo, HEAVENS WHAT HAVE I DONE in this location.
