  • If you wanted to spend the night with Conan O'Brien, you may have just missed a huge opportunity. The talk show host recently listed his TV studio on the renter's site Airbnb, and selected a group of ladies to stay for three nights out of thousands of applicants.
  • Arachnophobes beware: Spiders have invaded the Natural History Museum's South Lawn for Spider Pavilion. Free to spin their webs for all to see, arachnids of all kinds - from common orb weavers to jewel garden spiders - will safely be on display for the rest of October.
  • There are so many good events happening tonight, we’re bummed that we can’t make it to all of these. For some reason, it’s a good night for film in LA, with a newly restored Ernst Lubitsch classic at the Egyptian, Modern Times at LACMA and NewFilmmakers LA’s monthly program at Sunset Gower. We’ve also found a great discussion on the state of journalism and a one-night only concert by Allee Willis. Read on for all the details.
  • Native Californian and artist John Baldessari lives in the aesthetic ghetto of Los Angeles, and in a recent talk with the L.A. Times' Christopher Knight, said plainly that this city's ugliness is a necessity for him to create his art.
  • Last night's "Walking Dead" premiere broke basic cable records all but ensuring a 3rd season. --- #SNL disappointed for a 2nd week in a row. --- "Sons of Anarchy" gets a 5th season. --- "After Lately" back in Nov. --- More news & The TV Junkie Must-Watch Plan.
  • Halloween is almost upon is! Until such time as goblins and spooky-themed shows take over our landscape, try to get out for some comedy. Tiger Lily continues to bring the pain with a horrifyingly good line up, while Eddie Izzard is doing two shows over at Largo.
  • We found a few events going on about town tonight. As usual, it's a mix of live music and DJ sets at Bardot for It's a School Night; Family Bookstore holds an opening reception for artist/composer John Wiese; Robert Scheer and Mr. Fish are in discussion at Vroman's; and films by Vittorio de Sica and Janie Geiser are on the big screen.
  • All this talk about Siri reminds us of good our friend Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey. You know what else does? Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra, which the Pacific Symphony is performing this Thursday Friday and Saturday at 8 PM.
  • It’s easy to feel as if you’ve seen it all when you live in Los Angeles. After all, Angelenos have access to the some of the best entertainment, restaurants and recreation on the planet. But there are a few places in Southern California that can still surprise and delight, if you know where to find them. Case in point: Oak Glen.
  • In Bob Dylan's song, "Absolutely Sweet Marie," there's a lyric that reads: "to live outside the law you must be honest." Along the lines of that seemingly incongruous bit of wisdom runs my own thought on arty or avant-garde theatre — just being clever isn't enough. You have to demonstrate excellent quality and above all, be interesting.
