Topline:

PBS SoCal will preview the new American Revolution documentary by Ken Burns today at the Academy Museum's David Geffen Theatre. Burns spoke with LAist about how he hopes The American Revolution will unite the country.

Why it matters: The documentary arrives as the U.S. marks the 250th anniversary of the Revolution’s start. Burns believes a good story can transcend the country’s red-state-blue-state divisions by demonstrating that historical figures were just as complex as people today are.

The backstory: The six-part, 12-hour series took eight years to produce and features nearly 200 historical figures voiced by actors including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Josh Brolin as George Washington. Burns and his team shot at nearly 100 locations across multiple seasons to capture the story of the eight-year war that changed the world.

When can I watch the documentary? The American Revolution premieres Sunday, Nov. 16, and airs for six consecutive nights through Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. on PBS. The full series will be available to stream through the PBS website and the PBS App.
