Best things to do this weekend in Los Angeles and Southern California: November 22 - 24

Two dancers, a man and a woman, pose mid-routine. It's a still from the "Little Women" ballet. The woman has her arms outstretched, holding an open umbrella with one leg extened behind her. In the background a cellist sits, watching the performance.

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

As I walked through Descanso Garden’s annual Enchanted light installation earlier this week, I was — as always — taken by the sheer amount of work it takes to launch something that extensive. If you’ve never been, the gardens every year turn their space into a lit-up fairy land, with fields of illuminated flowers, trees bespeckled in colored light, artist installations across fields, and a model train that’s the stuff of A Christmas Story dreams. It’s an event that really encapsulates the magic of the holidays in L.A. to me — that you can be transported somewhere more “holiday-y” using the city’s creativity and still celebrate that we live in Southern California. (Those enormous agaves kind of give it away!)

And that’s just one of the many holiday events that kick off this week. If you, like me, get stressed out by the "what should we do today?" question when you have family in town, then hopefully this list will give you a head start on planning. And if you’re heading out of town for Thanksgiving, take advantage of the last weekend ahead of the holiday to get in the spirit before things get busy and more booked up in December.

For more to explore, visit LAist.com where you can get a preview of the Long Beach Opera’s upcoming season, and pore through our exclusive holiday gift guides featuring local experiences, books, crafts, and more.

Sherwin takes the audience on a journey through rabbit holes of trivia, music, and comedy; he calls it a blend of the New York Times crossword and Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me – sounds like something LAist listeners would be super into!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
