Best things to do this weekend in Los Angeles and Southern California: December 20 - 22

These shortest days of the year are always tough, but at least after Saturday, even as we head into winter winter (well, as winter as L.A. gets, anyway), there’s an extra teensy amount of light every day. Phew!
And this week is all about light, with the Newport Boat Parade bringing some joy on the water in Orange County, light in the form of laughter at the Actors Gang improv show, and light as in lifting off the doldrums with a spiritually cleansing sound bath.
For more to explore, visit LAist.com where you can learn how to be the holiday party MVP when you bring these local desserts, look back on Taylor Swift’s epic Eras Tour, or head to this secret spot where you can take the best winter sunset photos (maybe for next year’s holiday cards).

The Bourbon Room is curated exquisitely. If there’s a quirky show promoted there, I’m always going to try to see it, and this week’s offering is no exception. BATSU! is a Japanese game show-slash-theater-slash-improv event that will make its L.A. debut with five performances at the Hollywood venue next month. Playbill videographer Ethan Treiman called the experience, which premiered at Edinburgh Fringe “maybe my favorite thing I’ve ever seen.” Count me in.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.
But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.
We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else.
