Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Summer nights outside continue all across L.A. this week — from Singin’ in the Rain at the Hollywood Bowl to an eco-friendly book club meetup in Santa Monica. Plus there’s a free comedy night at Neuehouse in Hollywood, incredible Louisiana guitar legends at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, and a screening with artist Alison Saar at the Getty.

And just a reminder that it’s never too early to make your plan to vote. If you’re fired up following the conventions, make sure to keep LAist’s Voter Game Plan bookmarked as we head toward November.

For more to explore, at LAist.com you can also learn how and where to resell clothes after your next closet cleanout, visit a new art show at USC’s Fisher Museum that explores queer history, and read an ode to the original Japanese convenience store in LA, Famima!.

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer is this month’s green-themed book club read at Merrihew Gardens in Santa Monica. The bestseller by botanist and Citizen Potawatomi Nation member Kimmerer examines what Indigenous knowledge can teach us about being better stewards of the land around us. Discuss the book amid the plants and flowers in the nursery’s relaxing — and apt! — setting.

The internet has been good to progressive pundit Brian Tyler Cohen. The YouTuber and podcaster joins Pod Save America host Jon Favreau at Writer’s Bloc for a conversation that’s sure to be dynamic following the DNC in Chicago as the presidential race heats up. Cohen’s new book Shameless: Republicans’ Deliberate Dysfunction and the Battle to Preserve Democracy will be the centerpiece of the conversation, which aims to hold the GOP to task during this tumultuous time.

Led by artistic and music director Rachael Worby, MUSE/IQUE’s latest piece focuses on the undertold history of the Moulin Rouge — not the one in Paris, but the one just outside Las Vegas. It was the first integrated hotel and casino. It hosted a who’s who of performers from Harry Belafonte to Judy Garland to Sammy Davis Jr. and many more who built the backbone of the Las Vegas entertainment scene as we know it today. Worby always takes us on a unique trip through history with fantastic musical guests. If you miss it this week, the show continues on Sept. 4-5 at Skirball Cultural Center.

If you read this column regularly, you know I’m a big New Orleans Jazzfest fan and these two are bringing the 504 to SoCal this week as the guitar and songwriting legends play together on their extensive back catalogs and try out some new tunes. “Psych-blues” slide guitarist JD Simo opens.

What a wonderful feeling to be at the Hollywood Bowl (and definitely not in the rain this time of year!), watching Gene Kelly do his thing on the big screen. A perfect summer night out for a singalong, especially with the LA Phil accompaniment, you’ll be dancing all the way back down Highland.

The space V Wine Room now occupies was once a library and, before that, a studio for Charlie Chaplin. Now, it’s a cozy space to enjoy curated wines at a new weekly happy hour. Monday through Thursday, all wine from bottles opened the previous night is $2 off, and the happy hour menu features Roman-style pizzas. Salute!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
