Best things to do this week in Los Angeles and Southern California: August 26 - 29

Summer nights outside continue all across L.A. this week — from Singin’ in the Rain at the Hollywood Bowl to an eco-friendly book club meetup in Santa Monica. Plus there’s a free comedy night at Neuehouse in Hollywood, incredible Louisiana guitar legends at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, and a screening with artist Alison Saar at the Getty.
And just a reminder that it’s never too early to make your plan to vote. If you’re fired up following the conventions, make sure to keep LAist’s Voter Game Plan bookmarked as we head toward November.
For more to explore, at LAist.com you can also learn how and where to resell clothes after your next closet cleanout, visit a new art show at USC’s Fisher Museum that explores queer history, and read an ode to the original Japanese convenience store in LA, Famima!.

MUSE/IQUE: Freedom at the Moulin Rouge
-
The Huntington
1151 Oxford Rd., San Marino
Led by artistic and music director Rachael Worby, MUSE/IQUE’s latest piece focuses on the undertold history of the Moulin Rouge — not the one in Paris, but the one just outside Las Vegas. It was the first integrated hotel and casino. It hosted a who’s who of performers from Harry Belafonte to Judy Garland to Sammy Davis Jr. and many more who built the backbone of the Las Vegas entertainment scene as we know it today. Worby always takes us on a unique trip through history with fantastic musical guests. If you miss it this week, the show continues on Sept. 4-5 at Skirball Cultural Center.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.
But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.
We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.
Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
