Best Things To Do This Week In Los Angeles And Southern California: May 20 - 23

Don’t let May Gray get you down! If the marine layer has been taking its toll, take a hike, see a play, let cool art inspire you, or just listen to some jazz that fits the mood. And yes, I know Bridgerton is back and the impulse not to leave the couch is strong!
This week, renowned author Amy Tan turns to nonfiction to reflect on the birds in her backyard, DJ Black Museumist hosts a deep dive on John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme in Long Beach, Angel City FC takes on the San Diego Wave, and two legendary bands in vastly different genres – Pearl Jam and Kraftwerk – hit the stage at the Forum and Disney Hall, respectively.
For more to explore, visit LAist.com, where you can grab a ticket to join Austin Cross and the James Beard Foundation at the Crawford for a talk about restaurants and community as part of the We Are Where We Eat series. Also, follow food writer Gab Chabran on a DIY taco tour in the arts district or get a sneak peek at all the spring flowers blooming at Descanso Gardens.

British-born (but icon of L.A.) artist David Hockney designed the sets for this production of Puccini favorite Turandot two decades ago, and the show returns to L.A. Opera this week at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The L.A. Times digs into the unique history of the set and how it came out of long-time storage for this new revival. Starring Angela Meade in the title role, the opera also features Russell Thomas as her suitor and Guanqun Yu.
Correction: A previous version of this listing misspelled Hockney's last name. LAist regrets the error.

Kismet’s Sara Kramer And Sarah Hymanson With Kate Berlant
-
Now Serving

Now this should be special. Kismet restaurant founders and cookbook authors Sara Kramer and Sarah Hymanson are talking with none other than comedian of the moment Kate Berlant — just off her mega sold-out show at Pasadena Playhouse earlier this year — at one of the best bookstores in L.A., Now Serving. The duo bring to life their unique spin on Mediterranean cuisine in their book, also called Kismet, and will talk about recipes (like their famed salty-sweet persimmon salad and their chicken that launched a whole separate restaurant), entrepreneurship, and writing with Berlant, followed by a meet and greet with fans.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
