Best things to do Christmas week in Los Angeles and Southern California: December 23 - 26

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Seth Cohen may have called it on The O.C. back in 2003, but 21 years later, we really are getting Chrismukkah, as the first day of Hanukkah collides with Christmas Day. To be fair, we already got our Chrismukkah miracle earlier this year in the form of Seth Cohen – I mean Adam Brody – as hot rabbi Noah in the Netflix series Nobody Wants This. Still, no matter what holiday you celebrate, it is a special time of year. Of course, every neighborhood has beautiful choirs and Midnight Mass services, Hanukkah menorah lightings, and Christmas pageants. But we’ve taken a minute to highlight some things you maybe didn’t know were going on this coming week and a few ideas of what to do with your family once the presents are opened and the food demolished.

And speaking of doing good, it’s end-of-year giving time and LAist can use your support more than ever. If you can, please give a tax-deductible donation to LAist today – you can even snag that cute olive green hoodie for the hard-to-shop-for person on your list.

It’s your last chance to check out the annual A Noise Within production of the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. What’s Christmas without Ebenezer Scrooge? The adaptation by Geoff Elliot is faithful to the novel — not a single word has been added — and also stars Elliot alternating in the Scrooge role with Frederick Stuart. The show closes on Christmas Eve.

Victorian decorations abound at the Grier Musser Museum ahead of Christmas Day. From an elaborate tree to antique Santas, the turn-of-the-century Queen Anne house and museum is decked out in its holiday max. It’s the closest we get around here to a true Victorian Christmas, minus the snow and the mulled wine!

The annual Christmas Eve bash started as a Jewish singles party and now it’s for anyone who would rather party on Dec. 24. The event, geared at folks ages 21-49, takes over Bootsy Bellows with music, dancing, and the chance to meet a holiday sweetheart.

If you have free time on Christmas, consider putting it towards helping others. That’s what the holidays are all about, right? Help give out produce, set up Christmas Day activities for our unhoused neighbors, or help with meal distribution in Venice. You’ll feel good and help our community at the same time. What could be better?

The exhibit includes a light tunnel, a history of the famous toy, space for sensory play, an opportunity to make your own light-up creature, a 360-degree theater, and more.

Movie buffs have been waiting all year for the final Oscar-bait movies to come out, and it's finally time for Christmas Day releases, so head out to your local theater for the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown starring Timothy Chalamet, Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman, or The Fire Inside, from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins. Of course, lots of new movies have come out in the past month since the Thanksgiving rush, so if you haven’t seen Moana 2, Wicked, The Brutalist, or Mufasa yet, book your tickets now. Christmas Day is a deceptively busy time at the movies, so make sure to plan ahead or you’ll be in the very front row with a sore neck as your Christmas present.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
