Amazon in hot pursuit of YA and action-based material for Prime Video

With the fall TV series buying series in full swing, Amazon Prime Video remains one of the most consistent streamers listening to pitches even if its buying may be more proscribed.

Why it matters: Prime Video is the largest ad-supported streamer in the United States, available to all Amazon Prime subscribers. Its global reach and the company’s vast resources makes it an appealing venue for creators and their reps to take a show.

Bureaucracy now: Amid a production slump following the strikes, two streaming services are still consistently hearing pitches: Netflix and Amazon. That said, agents have reported confusion about to whom they should bring their pitches at the streamer and an overall slow process, which frustrates them and their clients.

Fountain of youth: Studios across the board are looking for young adult programming, but Amazon in particular wants YA from “in-the-zeitgeist IP” as it searches for the next The Summer I Turned Pretty, one of its hit shows. Amazon’s reliance on IP reflects its understanding that the biggest challenge for creating a YA hit is drawing in viewers more accustomed to TikTok or Instagram than a streamer’s library catalog.

Taking action: Like its YA desires, Amazon is looking for action series based on IP, a genre it’s leaned on with Jack Ryan, Reacher and The Terminal List. But the company Is not looking for yet another male-led action series, instead seeking out “woman with a gun” series, according to an agent. In that vein, Amazon announced a new Reacher spinoff earlier this month, starring Maria Sten.
