The first weekend of the annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival concluded Monday morning when the last remaining campers packed up and drove home.

Last Friday, more than 100,000 music fans made their way to the Empire Polo Fields in Indio to attend concerts headlined by Radiohead, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar, said Indio Police Department Sgt. Dan Marshall to KPCC.

They posed for pictures, danced and camped under the stars, all while bringing a relatively low amount of crime and mayhem to the Coachella Valley, Marshall said. But there were a few unfortunate incidents, he added.

A woman was struck by a car when she ran across a street. She suffered several broken bones, but nothing life-threatening, according to Marshall. The driver did not stop and was still outstanding as of Monday afternoon, he said.

On Friday, the Indio Police Department arrested Reinaldo De Jesus Henao for stealing more than 100 cell phones at the festival, according to a press release.

"Other than that, the concert was very successful," Marshall said.

Ahead of the festival's second weekend, which kicks off on Friday, the Indio Police Department will make relatively few adjustments, Marshall said.

"We're finishing up [at the festival grounds], going home and getting some rest," he said.

Marshall shared several tips for next week's attendees.

Anyone planning to attend the second weekend of Coachella should keep their phones in their front pockets to avoid pickpockets, he said.

Before packing up to go home, attendees should check to make sure their cars will start. Right when campers are ready to go, they should find their keys and start their car up, he said.

If it doesn't start, put the hood up. That way the concert's tow trucks will know to stop and assist, Marshall said.

Campgrounds for the festival's second weekend open on Thursday, he said.
