Watch a time-lapse video of the 6th Street Bridge getting demolished

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

Forty hours done, about nine more months to go.

The first demolition phase of the the Sixth Street Viaduct began on the evening of Feb. 5 and ended the morning of Super Bowl Sunday.

That’s after hundreds of Angelenos bid their farewell to the beloved 84-year-old bridge, and Mayor Eric Garcetti performed a slow jam PSA about the 101 Freeway's closure for the demolition.

Starting with crews putting construction equipment into place and ending with debris settling, this time lapse from Caltrans shows the 40 hours in which the first 250 feet of the bridge came down.

A chemical reaction in the concrete had forced the city of Los Angeles to embark on a $449 million project to replace the Sixth Street Bridge with a new viaduct, which is expected to be completed in 2019.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
