Update 5:50 p.m.: Suspect pronounced dead; No weapon recovered

The suspect in Sunday's shooting has been pronounced dead, LAPD confirmed Sunday.

No weapon has been recovered from the scene, police said.

Central Division officer Dave Romero said police responded to several simultaneous calls of robbery and battery shortly after 11:30 a.m. outside the Union Rescue Mission at 545 San Pedro Street.

"They get to the location; officers encounter the suspect," he said. "During that time a use-of-force occurs and an officer-involved shooting ensues."

One officer was injured in the scuffle, Romero said, but is expected to recover.

The shooting is now under investigation by LAPD's Force Investigation Division.

"It's a lengthy investigation," Romero said. "They interview witnesses at the scene. They try to recover any video evidence so they can view that and see if it's the same or any different from the statements they're receiving from officers and from witnesses."

Streets in downtown Los Angeles were closed off after police shot and injured an individual in the area Los Angeles Sunday morning.

LAPD spokesman Jack Richter said officers responded to 5th and San Pedro streets in the heart of L.A.'s Skid Row shortly after 11:30 a.m.

"There was an altercation between two people," Richter said. "During that encounter, one of them was shot" by police.

The injured individual was treated by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital, CBS reported.

The circumstances behind the incident are not yet clear. Richter said detectives at the scene Sunday afternoon were trying to determine what happened.
